I, too, am hanging on to an older phone (Moto X 1st gen) because there's nothing left that runs naked Android that's small enough. I feel like the pendulum has swung too far into tablones (never 'phablets'!).
I'm hopeful that either (a) Google comes around to making a normal sized Nexus, or (b) other high-end manufacturers start to ship pure (or close to pure) Android OS on some of their devices. We don't need no stinkin' TouchWiz/Sense/Optimus/&c crud.

Unfortunately, the Xperia brand is not doing well in the US. Sony has completely neglected marketing their phones here, so very few people know the Z5 Compact even exists. There has been a good deal of speculation that Sony might stop selling Xperia in the US entirely or even carve off their ailing mobile division.
I was going to jump to the 5x, but a limit of 16GB storage with no external storage in this day and age of high-end phone cameras, video, app bloat, etc. is just flat out unacceptable for me in a phone at this point.
It's a shame they have such an awful UI, because Samsung is doing some really great stuff with their Galaxy line on the hardware side of things.
Hope google adds smaller phones to their lineup.
Comparing the 5X with the 6 and 6P is disingenuous -- the numbers refer to the phone size, not generation number.
Granted I thought the 5X was too big, considering the 5 was already pushing that limit, but still.
It's junk. Didn't last one year. I'm getting used to the N5X now.
