Still up, and it does prompt for a password. But he said the Chinese had been trying to get in for 2 weeks and failed, so it's probably not something obvious.

Why is he not using public key authentication? Or even better, limiting access with a firewall.

It's unlikely to be a problem.

"The Chinese" (botnets) probe my ssh daemons all the time, but only with common, poor passwords.
