SF CEO Calls Rural Americans Racist; Institutes Xenophobic Hiring Rule

I'm sure that the best way to reach out to rural Americans is another "scathing lecture" from someone who doesn't live in their community.

Hrm. Me thinks there is a term for pre-judging groups of people... oh right, Prejudice. But its totally cool when it conforms to your own morals

I feel like this highlights a number of topics recently discussed on HN. I'll just run through them.

> smugness

People on "both sides" (because there are always sides) think the other side is either too dumb to understand or operating according to some agenda that is inherently detrimental to them and all-encompassing.

> poor leadership

I didn't research this CEO's qualifications, but it would seem, given that the article mentions her job/service as dealing with hiring, she isn't as qualified in the details or leadership category since she outright ignored federal regulations. Then again, it has become popular to ignore the law as a method to changing it and/or becoming profitable.

> co-location

The density in SF and especially the Valley continues to be the biggest benefit. You can throw a rock and hit ten people who want to give someone money. It can't help but create an insulated, group-think inducing environment. It's what leads to so many more examples of poor-leadership; too many ideas, companies, investments, etc. but not enough skilled managers and leaders.

Also, there has been this influx of legal-speak, and thus legal definitions supplanting common definitions, and prejudice is a good example. Prejudice in and of itself is common, natural, and manageable. However, when prejudice leads someone to treat others in a harmful way, then we have a problem, then we have discrimination.

Discrimination, we can legislate against, however prejudice is difficult to battle because it intermingles with our natural instincts. It's the reason that someone can be an avid supporter of equality while still moving to the other side of the street when they see someone of a different color while alone.

Arguably, it's a waste of time to fight "prejudice" in these terms, but rather, we can achieve a more equitable society by consistently and uniformly applying anti-discrimination laws. Eventually, the status-quo could naturally evolve into one of maximum fair-treatment.

This looks like another drunk tweet.

Stupid. You can get away with this kind of stupid stuff when you're an unknown college student. Even then if you ever get even a tiny bit of notoriety all your dumb tweets will come out.

If folks in "flyover country" developed a caricature of what they thought hardcore Leftist coastal dwellers sounded like, the result probably wouldn't be too dissimilar to this.

Astounding.
