I get the idea of what you're saying, but there are absolutely reasons to buy a new-ish car: safety. Rear facing camera, better structure, abs, traction control, automatic emergency breaking, etc. have all either been added or improved not that long ago. It's not as massive difference as between 1950's and 2000, but there's still a considerable improvement.

It doesn't mean you need a new one straight from the dealer of course. Buying something slightly used will save you lots of money.
