Sounds to me like the sign was put there by someone making fun of the signs they had to put elsewhere in the hotel

Nah, I think this was legit. I lived in a place that had the same thing. I think it's because some doors lead to a place that is near a location where cars might be.

Probably for exhaust from cars idling at the entrance. You'll see a similar warning in the walkways to your plane in the airport.

I've lived in California for the past 9 years. I grew up here and left before returning, but that was before the crazy signs.

I sat here and tried to remember the last time I saw this 'causes cancer' sign, and failed. They are actively invisible to me.
