Mojave doesn't ship with subpixel antialiasing. The "LCD font smoothing" checkbox disables greyscale smoothing.
My point was if that box is checked in Mojave (that is, greyscale anti-aliasing is on) the fonts still look atrocious. Sorry if that was not clear.
