Meowhash is advertised as 16 bytes per cycle. MD5 is around 5 cycles per byte[0] or 0.2 bytes per cycle.

Pre-existing fast non-cryptographic hashes apparently top out around 5.5 bytes per cycle (CityHashCRC256).

Thank you. The comparison of MeowHash to SHA without mentioning MD5 or any actual performance numbers didn't make sense.

I think what GP meant was that MD5 is meant to be cryptographic, and parenthetically, it's bad at it. MeowHash is not even meant to be cryptographic, so it is much faster.

Orders of magnitude faster.
