I mean, I love their tooling too, but the financial markets couldn't give a damn about VS Code or TypeScript. The GitHub acquisition is interesting, but as far as I know, GH was losing money on operations. I think Azure's growth, Office and Windows continued strength in the mobile era (despite predictions of the end of the PC), have more to do with MS's stock price than TypeScript.

Isn't the better tooling at least part of what fuels the growth of Azure, Office, and Windows by making it more useful to consumers?

Azure yes, Windows and Office no. TypeScript and VSCode make it easier to migrate AWAY from Windows.

But they also make is easier to migrate to Windows. .NET Core is a similar play.

Microsoft can no longer rely on Windows alone to pull developers and products to Windows so instead they're trying to attract developers to build for any & every platform on Microsoft's stack and support Windows as a by product and maybe choose Azure as well.

So in a sense they've switched to a carrot model rather than a stick model.
