it was ahead of its time. if you watch the pilot episode, you will see near the beginning, spock interacting with ships computer verbally, but also with open air gesticulation. [ finger swiping the air to indicate next to the computer] the comms earpiece are very similar to the bluetooth ear sets that used to be cool to some people. does the sci predict the tech or does the tech imitate the sci fi.?

It was also a product of its time. The computer would calculate things slowly with the sound of a punch card machine, beeps and flashing lights[0] and its voice synthesis was ROBOTIC, because that's what the future sounded like in the 1960s.

I think both. Obviously there's a bit of reasonable extrapolation on the part of the writers, but lots of engineers and scientists inspired by the series have also tried to make that future happen.

Damn right it doesn't suck. To this day I'll often leave it on for background while programming or doing other projects. It's a good sound it's a good show it's got good feels. And lots of advanced ideas in there.
