How does an eclipse work?
I understand that it is caused by the earth's shadow, what I don't understand is how this differs from the earth's shadow creating the different phases of the moon. How can there be a quarter, half, full or new moon that lasts all night most times but then on special occasions during eclipses all phases happen in a matter of hours. What is it that makes the difference?
