My phone gets the latest Android updates the day they are released even though it is a discontinued phone and not from Google.

If Google can't even get it right on their own devices, they can't be shifting the blame to manufacturers.
The only remotely-safe choice is an iPhone.
To be fair, Google only guarantees support of even the Pixel for 3 years... so it still kind of is.
