Under preferences -> appearance you can choose status bar position: bottom (or top).

Then you can right click on the status bar to get to the editor.

I really want to turn off the status bar. I can tell I'm not going to use it, and now it's just taking up space and confusing my habituated eye as I scan the screen.

Anyone found an off-button?

Go to Preferences > Profiles > Session and at the bottom there's a checkbox labeled "Status Bar Enabled".
