It used to be possible to register for an Apple Id that you could use to install apps without providing your credit card details. It it not entirely obvious how, but I managed to do it in the past by registering from the device itself and skipping the part where it asked for card info. I no longer own an Apple device, so can't verify whether that is still possible.
