This is a provocation. Protesters will now counter arm themselves with similar bats and sticks, which in turn will give the police extra justification when they uncover "weapons". It will be used by the Chinese domestic media as justification to crack down hard.
Singapore again? Australia? Don't know. Depends on opportunities. If anyone needs a good product guy, let me know
Unfortunately Hong Kong has never been competitive in tech offerings and quality of life has been going down dramatically over recent years.
Shame that it's going downhill:
* extreme inequality - fresh graduates will have to work for a decade or more before they'll be able to put down a deposit for a 150 sq foot "shoebox", while the tycoons with their mansions on The Peak are chauffeured around in Rolls Royce and helicopters
* gradual erosion of civil liberties
* air pollution
* ridiculous rents - any business will have the rent increased on it until they're just scraping by, if at all. Main Street mom and pop shops are replaced by luxury shops catering to rich tourists (in China, you have value added tax, luxury tax, and the risk of fakes - so they much prefer buying in HK). For example, more Swiss watches are sold in HK (with 7m inhabitants) than in any other country [1]
The indomitable spirit of the Hong Kongers is inspiring though.

Unfortunately tech salaries are the lowest across Asia and not many good opportunities out there. Otherwise, sure ;)
Speaking from experience, it is difficult to wrap a liberal mind around this.
From my limited understanding, pro Beijing people support rule by fear, since fear is the very reason they support the communist party.
They fear to even flich no matter what the communist party does to them, because they fear the revenge. That's why they want others to feel the same. That's why they approve of the violent suppression of protests. They don't believe there is hope for resistance, so they choose the winning side.
It's selfish, irrational, and immoral. There were judenrats during world war 2, and red guards during China's cultural revolution. It's all the same.

It was leaked a few days ago that the government was planning to use triads to do the dirty work (See point 4 in [3] and [4] in Chinese). Using triads happened during the 2014 umbrella protest, but this time the attack on arbitrary citizens (not necessarily the protesters) is on a completely different scale: a terrorist attack.
And there are videos showing that the police “co-operated” with the triads (by turning a blind eye: arriving at the scene late [5] [6], chatting with the triad attackers [7] [8], closing the police stations and not responding to cases during the events).

Unfortunately, that has never happened in history.
Controlled opposition and provocation are tried and true methods for controlling narrative and spin balancing. Unfortunately, the silicon valley bubble crowd can neither be disabused of their fantastical notions of reality nor can they accept that their unwashed heros may in fact be a part of the machine they tacitly support.
