Usually political figures are "assassinated" people on active duty in active wars/conflicts are "killed" unless we also called the attacks on Americans in Iraq and Syria perpetrated by Iran-backed militias as "assassinations" too.
If John McCain or Joe Biden (VP is a very close analog here) had been killed by the Iranian military while visiting Iraq or Syria it would certainly have been termed an assassination.
Our misdeeds and overall tendency for deception when it comes to that part of the world makes me highly skeptical of anything we announce when it comes to military operations in that region. Iran isn't a good guy when it comes to the geopolitics of the Middle East but then again, neither is pretty much any other country in that mess. It's difficult to know if this news is actually a good step forward or just more splashing around in mud puddles because we can.
