Ask HN: What's going on at SO?

I kind of expect this to be blocked for some reason, but whenever I'm on SO I see links to "thankyou, X" posts on Meta which list moderators who have been fired or quit. What's going on? Is the quality of SO likely to decline? That would be a big deal.
