There's a whole genre of such tutorials. The best one I've seen is the Non-Designer's Design Book: https://diegopiovesan.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/livro_-_th... It shows many messy layouts, and applies four principles (alignment, contrast, proximity, repetition) to make each layout look better.
