This is exactly the experience I had with MS Dynamics. Hideous. So hideous I refuse to work in that field anymore.
Working with Dynamics CRM and it is an absolute joy customizing the system and building custom stuff on top of it. Very well architected under the hood. Well, it's CRM ofcourse and not ERP monster.
