FYI, AIDS is an acronym (though the periods are dropped) for Auto-Immune Deficiency Syndrome. So all four letters are capitalized.

In British English, however, only the first letter is capitalized if it is reads a word, so it would be Aids.

This is true, but these rules don’t usually get applied in the (medical) sciences. cf anything published by the NHS.
