Ask HN: Modern State of Desktop Developmenet

Hello!

There is lots of talk back and forth on the benefits of systems like Electron.

I'm curious of the modern state of development for the desktop. Where are resources being devoted, are there any well known best practices?

I'm just curious where one (experienced in other areas) would start in this field.
