I still don't see how to parse it.

Friendly fire isn't friendly, but critical thinking is critical.

There you go. But once you phrase it clearly, anything that was particularly amusing about the unparseable construction must go away.

I think there are some spurious words included.

"Critical thinking is as friendly fire isn't" works. "Critical thinking is; friendly fire isn't" works better (along the same lines as "Variables don't; constants aren't.")

That's gotta be what they meant.
