Probably an unpopular opinion here but this whole situation just comes off as so immature to me.

Author of free open source library loudly proclaims they won’t continue to do work for free. Loudly proclaims again when getting sponsored by one of the worst companies in the world that he will continue working on said project.

It’s a test data generator, not a Linux kernel, what sort of work is even left to justify being paid full time?

He didn't say full time, but what's the problem with someone asking for money in exchange for work?

There’s nothing wrong with that. The issue is fighting your way back from completely free

I respect your opinion, but I also do hope this is an unpopular opinion.

The author according to his tweet had lost everything and was close to becoming homeless. [1] Being loud with his comments could have been due to stress or just an attempt to gather attention that might help him find a gig to get him out of the mess he was in.

As for the resolution; unfortunately not everyone has the luxury to spend time and carefully chose their employers and in this case if Godaddy bailed him out I don't see the issue with him publicly thanking them.

I wasn’t aware of their situation, and it does change the way I view this issue a bit now, thanks for bringing it up!

I can side with the author more now, to know that you’re about to lose everything and have to know that many companies are out there freely using something you released on good faith is fucking terrible.

I do wish them luck finding compensation for their hard work, I truly do. Nobody should have to live in fear that their entire livelihood is on the line. I hope it works with godaddy for now, but I also hope they pursue stable income that doesn’t cost them their soul too :)

What a reasonable response. Thanks for being a good human bean

That's... part of the story.

tl;dr It seems like burnt down his own apartment while making a bomb.

At least they're doing something useful in this situation, sponsoring an OSS project! We shouldn't throw the fact that this is important for companies to do away just because we don't like said company, without stronger justification than what has been presented here.

Also, good fakers are hard, I thought the same thing, tried to build my own, and failed bad.

Glad to see some progress here. Context and previous discussion: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25032105

Congratulations. Last time I used GoDaddy to look up a domain name, it magically became unavailable right away. One person I know also had this happen to them. Very strange and sounds like the "I talked about X near my phone and next thing you know, ads are appearing", but it's strange.

GoDaddy has been known for doing that for a long time now, never ever check a domain on their website, I personally use AWS, never had an issue.

Transferring ownership of a project seems like quite a big step in order to get support.

I'm not familiar with hooks.io, but transferring ownership of something that seems promising in return for support for another thing feels a bit sleazy?

I didn't know Godaddy was in the explosives business

Context for those who need it: Marak kept bombmaking equipment in a NYC apartment complex, burned down his own apartment.

I wasn’t aware of this. Do you know where I can read more?

I have most of this stuff in my home as well, along with pounds of gunpowder. Absent other evidence, I tend to believe Marak.

I think the intent is what’s up for debate. Perhaps Marak has a hobby and isn’t making explosives for malicious purposes. Ok, cool.

But you still don’t keep that stuff in a dense apartment building.

What a terrible company to join and give your project to.

Related sentiment: what a sad state of affairs that an industry whose productivity is coupled with FOSS software, struggles to find solutions to support FOSS.
