Show HN: Why we need to leave HN

4 pointsandev25 comments

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2581409 WAS my thread. The title of the thread was "Unusable HN, scared hackers" I created it. it does NOT matter if I am right or wrong but I have a right to initiate discussion.

now I cant comment on it. there are questions being asked on it by people like ColinBright (challenging me to create an alternate HN, which I never undertook and is besides the point)

and it is shut down! WOW. way to go HN

edit: the usernames are different because I cant post anything new at all from the old one! again, it defies logic. but thats how HN rolls

edit: I was referring to the unusability of HN where... - where HN repeatedly gives me link expired errors - is managed by PG and therefore influences the thinking in the posts here (for example, no single founders)

View on HN

You didn't give any reasons as to why you thought HN was broken, you just asserted that it was, and quite rudely too. I interpreted that as trolling, so I flagged it. Seems like a few other people flagged it too.

If you want to initiate useful discussion, you need to establish context with your initial post. That usually takes more than a single sentence.

thanks for admitting you did. That takes courage. But I assumed it was common knowledge, I hear that everywhere. like you are explaining your opinion of my post only right now, let me explain mine I cannot click on the "next" button more than a few times before having to start off all over again. the reason people use HN is not, in my opinion, for the quality of the service, but because of the feeling that they are being watched. there is also a inherent negativity in the way HNers treat a particular type of application (facebook based, for example)

It might help if you explain what you're actually complaning about, rather than ... forgive me, babbling incoherently. As far as I can tell, you're angry because the Next button isn't working and because people have preferences?

you missed the point, again

its difficult to explain the context when your thread says [dead]

i am not angry. I just want to start a discussion and I got blocked

I am talking about free speech!

Would help to know what the hell you are talking about ;)

alternatively, ask again. or (you kind of prove my point), block this thread as you would love to do

would help if you could read first http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2581409

Says [dead]

ofcourse, let me post the link content the way I see it when logged in with my previous username. sorry about the sarcastic post previous. I am just peeved.

follows...... -----------

[dead]

pavelludiq 1 day ago | link

The site is fine, its the content thats been sucking lately, fortunately, theres this convenient and usable "flag" link, i think I'll use it. -----

davidw 1 day ago | link

What do you mean unusable? Plenty of people use it every day just fine. -----

ColinWright 1 day ago | link

I look forward to your announcement of a replacement. -----

cstrouse 1 day ago | link

Other than occasional issues with OpenID not working right for me I don't have any problems with it. I find it perfectly usable. -----

I get link expired errors often too but that is an issue of scale and server reliability rather than usability don't you think?

+1 for the submission, so that it survives as a negative example of how not to approach a perceived problem.

well.. just the way you are approaching it

adevv, you're frustrated right now, which is totally understandable. Downvoting, counter-comments and flags in forums can be brutal. When faced with behavior that seems senseless and makes you angry a good strategy is to employ some exponential backoff algorithm (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/lam/NRL/backoff.html), i.e. increase your reply time and empathy by 2x before taking action. Otherwise, things start to go the way of pointless "Oh yeah, take this" exchanges.

How about gathering some data (scrape all the flagged submissions over a period and see if any patterns emerge) and present it to the community? I would very much would like to see such an analysis (e.g. there were some allegations in the past that submissions get quickly flagged that are negative about YC companies).

first sensible comment here.

you know what, i dont know if I have the energy to do this

I just had a great deal of expectations about HN and it seems maybe its not the forum I had painted it to be

Thanks anyways. sorry about the bad blood. will take a look at the article

you are awesome!

I think it may be user error... one day old account (tstuff) complains that the site is unusable.

on those grounds..

you must have been a real sissy when you first came in

Bravo!

I have no idea what you're talking about, so here is an ascii picture of the Prophet Muhammad with a pancake on his head:

|~O:-|

No seriously, what are you talking about?

so follow the fucking Prophet

you found him!

whatare you doing in a thread you dont even understand

here is the keyword mate: read

sometimes it helps

OK, here's how it goes, as I understand it.

Step one: You have some poorly-defined complaints about HN. Apparently the "Next" button doesn't always work. In itself that seems like a legit complaint.

Step two: Instead of submitting with a headline like "Tell HN: next button not working" or emailing pg directly about it, you declare HN "unusable", the users "scared", and apparently we're all too afraid to speak up in case we want YC funding at some point in the future. Your submission on this subject is misspelled, confusing and unreadable.

Step three: said submission winds up dead for being misspelled, confusing and unreadable. Now, things really start getting weird.

Thanks smartass

let me have liberty to own my headline

you missed the point, again

its difficult to explain the context when your thread says [dead]

I just want to start a discussion and I got blocked.

hint: I am NOT talking about the next button. I am talking about free speech!

OK adevv, what I'm about to say might sound snarky but is in fact serious.

The way you're talking is paranoid and incoherent, and sounds a lot like the way a person with a mental illness would talk.

If you've been feeling strange lately then perhaps it may be a good idea to see a doctor, or at least to talk to some of the people in your real life about the feelings you've been having.

unable to comment again

this thread already has a ranking of -2... wow. for what?

guys I am being blocked again

I have created yet another account

if I dont comment for a while it means I have been clocked again

it kinda proves my point abut HN

edit: you may not be able to see the old one as it says dead.. read my reply to olalonde below please
