My experience is, don’t sell lifetime subscriptions, and don’t sell self-hosted versions.

Neither of them work out, business-wise.

The promise to open source if it goes bust adds more confidence though that a customer won’t be screwed.

I agree about lifetime. I’m suspicious of lifetime offers. I don’t think you are really going to support me in 2060! Is there anything from 1980 like this that is still supported?

Interesting idea. It will inject cash flow at the initial stage.
