This is a useful adage, but it is also good to check when making big changes.

Matt Kulukundis's cppcon talk on refactoring Google to use swisstables has some good stories about places where the tables really do diverge in observable behavior from the stdlib tables, but it turned out that precious few users actually ended up caring.

This is a powerful argument for shuffling behaviors you don't want users to come to depend on, every release or every initialization.

This advice has been seen successfully implemented for hash functions, where the users whose expectations were to be dashed were hackers hoping to exploit the results.

"With enough users any bug is considered a feature by someone."

Kudos for imagining and naming a law in your own name and posting here.

The story goes that Hyrum tried to call this "The Law of Implicit Interfaces", but within Google everyone started calling it Hyrum's law and that's what's caught on.
