Say Goodbye to the American Dream

This article is trying to be a reality check on the struggles of an increasingly powerless lower class, and I admire the intention there. But the concluding solutions of more voting and advocacy doesn’t hit home for me when compared to the scale of the problem that was presented. I think people, young people in particular, need to start thinking outside the box in regards to higher education, taking on debt, the jobs we take early on in our careers etc. the only way we can re-establish the American dream is by doing things much differently, and while I don’t have many answers on this myself, this article would have been better if had had attempted to propose some.

Blog post without new ideas or analysis. The closest thing it has to actual data is a (unlinked, plain-text) list of pop history books, dumped on the reader without summary or context. Overuses dramatic spacing every third paragraph. Lumps all higher education into a single category. Fails to interrogate the problems presented or to suggest solutions, beside "vote, educate ourselves and others, and stop spreading lies." Overall, disappointing and a waste of time.

> A good college education used to be a centerpiece of democracy. It guarantied upward mobility, and it was doing a great job until republicans embarked on a decades-long campaign to defund it.

This blog post is a joke.

I was waiting for the part that the story twists and tells us the positive things… it didn’t happen.

It’s a good point about how we’re currently paying for pension and welfare systems we’ll never get to participate in.

So much of this article is just wrong or flies in the face of actual data I am surprised to see it on HN. America has problems, but this article is really off point.

The magic of substack/medium is that now instead of journalists making extreme unsupported claims with click-baity titles, everyone can do it.

I suspect 2020s will be the decade when a lot of people will leave America and live in cheaper countries in LATAM or SE Asia. Who doesn't want to live a life among happy faces and with dignity?
