For those who are not familiar, a bit of context.

Pico-8 [1] is a "fantasy console" - basically an emulator for gameboy-style portable game console but without the actual hardware.

The emulator itself is a paid product and it comes with tooling and documentation to create games ("cartridges"). You can find many of them on itch.io [2].

For a free and open source alternative I recommend checking out TIC-80: https://github.com/nesbox/TIC-80

TIC-80 isn't quite as refined as PICO-8 but its still pretty awesome. A few months ago I figured out how to setup TIC-80 so I could code on my mobile whilst on the move: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxQpRoZI3kM

Absolutely love TIC-80. Definitely worth paying for the pro version even though you could just compile it from source if you want.

Similar, but no paid version at all, and you can write as much Python as you want.

The Pico-8 full environment (e.g. command line) is not open source, but the developer also released a standalone emulator which is free and open source, called Tac08: https://github.com/0xcafed00d/tac08

I don't think this is Zep's work fwiw. (Zep being "the developer" of pico-8).

I'm sure it wasn't intentional but the wording of your comment suggests some official association with Pico-8 of which there are none. Nico is just another pico-8 clone (not meant to be offensive), of which there are many in 2021.The only official projects are made by Zep at Lexaloffle. Pico-8, Voxatron, and a new one in the works called Picotron.

I'm sure the word "variant" doesn't suggest official association. "Version" would.
