Ask HN: Process to estimate career prospects of various tech?

I learned that basic Salesforce jobs pay comparable to years of programming experience. MuleSoft jobs pay very well, simply because of shortage of people.

Everything else being equal, what is your process in deciding what to learn? Obviously personal choices matter, but for this discussion, lets ignore them.
