What's up with the title? Assuming they're not sending a cake due to covid and remote working etc - makes it seem very clickbaitish.

It's in reference to this story (from 63 days ago): "Gitpod shipped GitHub a launch cake for Codespaces (gitpod.io)" [0], original article [1]

Maybe related to Firefox/Chrome cake history...

Hey, Geoff from Gitpod here (and the person who was behind cake to GitHub Codespaces). Indeed it is exactly related to that. Always was a fan of the idea of cake being shipped between product teams and the launch of Codespaces was a perfect chance to start a new tradition!

I would be v.happy to send cake (or macaroons) to the VSCode team as well but don’t have contacts. If you are in the team lemme know.

I believe that tradition was started in 2006 when Microsoft send Firefox dev team a cake

Like others mentioned, this story seems to be reference to Gitpod sending GitHub a launch cake for Codespaces.

If anyone is curious, user “tomvault” submitted this post with the following title:

> Microsoft open-sourcing VS Code Server and Gitpod won’t send them a cake

… which was later changed to:

> Thanks Microsoft for open-sourcing VS Code Server

There is another story behind this https://www.gitpod.io/blog/cake

Ok that's cute, but hn guidelines say the the post title should match the published title. The flexibility is for necessary shortening or scrubbing clickbait, not for editorializing.

> Otherwise please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait; don't editorialize.
