So what’s the line in a typical software org? I’m a senior engineer currently, and am looking to move up to Software Architect as a career path. Is it instead more reasonable to see it as Senior -> Staff -> Principal -> Architect? Do I have this wrong mentally?

I haven't seen the architect title in the normal ladder in a very long time. Usually it's reserved for specific key contributors like co-founders or key players that need to be retained above all else

From what I have seen (please correct me). Most orgs generally do:

SE, Senior SE, Staff, Sr Staff... OR SE, Senior SE, Principal, Sr. Principal...

I have not seen many orgs have staff and principal. Architect is not that common.
