Scope of claim mangled by headline:

> The museum said it was "one of the most significant" ancient discoveries in the UK.

"This is a truly remarkable discovery, and is the most important piece of prehistoric art to be found in Britain in the last 100 years. ..."

From the article

“Found in Britain in the last 100 years” is quite the qualifier to drop completely in this context.

I think GP is calling out the sweeping characterization of the headline posted here.

Your full quote provides the important context included in the original statement, “most important…to be found in Britain”.

Is it more important than the 30,000+ yo mammoth carving recently found in Swabia? Debatable, but the article never claimed it was contending for such a designation.

Is it more important than the 37,000 year old art found in Narwala Gabarnmung, and which has ties to sites in Turkey?

I'd wager a hard no.

"Most significant" .. in the UK.

I would wager that the discoveries at Narwala Gabarnmang are among the most important - to the rest of the human species - of all the pre-historic art currently under the gaze of the archeologists eye ..
