Karen Simulator – feel what it's like to be named Karen

This is fascinating spin on that whole "put yourself in the shoes of someone who has to experience X". Most non-Karens probably do not empathize with normal people named Karen -- how could you? But even surface-level discrimination based on something as arbitrary as a name can lead to real feelings of alienation and dehumanization.

Yep. I have a friend named Karen in my life. The meme has caused her sufficient distress that she has considered changing her name.

"how could you?" How could you not? It blew my mind how little push back there was against the use of this slur. Even more frustrating was that a lot of people using it were the people who claimed to be fighting against bigotry. Even if you didn't think it was racist or sexist, it was clearly something that would make anyone named Karen feel bad. It doesn't take extreme empathetic ability to understand that.

It's a very weird and worrying look into the way people think.

There was a company who ran a marketing stunt where they gave you a discount if you were called Karen, and IIRC a social media mob formed, called them racist, and they ended the promotion with a groveling apology.

Wonder what would've happened if they had extended the discount to people called Kareem as well...

I'm surprised at how everyone adopted it. It sounds like the mean jokes me and my friends who spent too much time online would make in high school. And even back then it was inappropriate. It's like 4chan culture became mainstream and everyone bought in because they didn't realize where that 'fun internet culture' came from

Personally I hope this works. I've always liked the name Karen. It would be great to see it get rehabilitated. I'm not a Karen, I don't know any Karens, but I can imagine that this must really suck for them.

I knew an Osama at university in 2003. Poor guy had to change his name. Another nice name ruined.

There are people named Saddam Hussein in the US. Possibly with slight spelling differences.

As Michael Bolton said "Why should I change? He's the one who sucks."

I wonder why certain names acquire the infamy of their worst namesakes (e.g. Adolf) and not others (e.g. Vladimir, Joseph)

I asked myself the same question for Joe, Donald, George etc. Everything is relativistic. As history teaches us the only difference between good and bad people is who they killed ( or ordered to be killed) .

Doesn't load anything after entering a name, or clicking "load more". Hn hug of death?

No "Cross-Origin Request Blocked". It loads Reddit with "Karen" replaced with X for posts with Karen in it. Really funny idea actually!

This one is tough because it doesn't feel like any one person or group is pushing this meme so there is no interface to push back on.

I've always felt bad for the Karens since this has been going on.

I don't get this Reddit "Mrs. Karen Boomer" thing. It seems like a bit distasteful cross-generation discontent, aimed at ordinary people of that generation?

And this site is a joke in that regard, what Reddit will look like if you were named Karen, as you would see "u/FuckYouYourname" everywhere and be used as a general scapegoat?

What is the point of this? Just because ones first name is involved in some social/cultural "thing" that is negative, doesn't mean it impacts a person (I've been in this situation as a kid). It only affects someone if they are called the "thing" intentionally, which generally does not require a person to share the true name.

Edit: thanks for downvoting my opinion that this website is ineffectual without supplying any evidence that it does work, or is better than a well explained article.

>What is the point of this?

to demonstrate a horrible aspect to an audience that might have otherwise thought the whole 'Karen' meme was harmless.

>Just because ones first name is involved in some social/cultural "thing" that is negative, doesn't mean it impacts a person (I've been in this situation as a kid).

while i'm glad you had the mental fortitude to deal with it, the name-calling is very real, and it has affected people in very real ways.

the social phenomenon has made people consider name changes[0], what more evidence do you need that a human cost/impact has occurred?

"the social phenomenon has made people consider name changes[0], what more evidence do you need that a human cost/impact has occurred?"

That shows it would be part of already changing her name as part of a marriage, to a more personal name/initials no less. Is it really that much of an issue if she's waiting to do it?

There are others in that cited article that don't have a problem with their name.

But bringing me back to the point, how does this website really demonstrate name calling? How does one think any slur is harmless - they're done specifically to hurt people. Anyone should be able to see that, and there would be much better ways to demonstrate that than this site.
