"Diversifying" = discriminating against those most qualified.

Now, if there are problems with your metrics for "most qualified" that might need addressing, but otherwise it's discrimination. Just because it's the brand of discrimination you like doesn't make it not discrimination.

Can you explain the basis of your first sentence?

What makes the brand of discrimination that you don't like not a metric for "most qualified"?

There have been cases of using metrics as a covert means of discrimination--for example, height requirements that have nothing to do with the job but plenty to do with including most men and excluding most women.
