More GitHub competition? Atlassian acquires SourceTree

SourceTree is a desktop client for DVCSs in general, not a webapp, so I'm not sure of the comparison. It's a pretty sweet piece of kit regardless.

It's also a side-project of Steve Streeting, the founder of OGRE3D: http://www.ogre3d.org/about/team

I think the idea is to compete with GitHub for Mac. As Tom Preston Werner mentioned a few weeks ago in why the company is putting so much emphasis on the Mac client, the idea is to go after a much wider user base than people who are able to use the command line. So that designers can use Git, for example.

This is interesting; SourceTree has shaken out, IMO, as the very best git client for Mac.

I hope Atlassian has the balls to leave in the support for github, even though they now own bitbucket.

Disclaimer: I work for Atlassian.

Yes of course they'll support github too. Check out the facts in here: http://www.sourcetreeapp.com/acquisition-faq/

Here's the quote: Will SourceTree drop support for non-Atlassian products (e.g. GitHub)?

Absolutely not! Atlassian is completely committed to empowering developers to use whatever tools they choose; artificially limiting choice is simply not on the agenda.
