Ask HN: Imigrating to Canada

Hi All,

I have recently written an inquiry about Canadian Tech jobs ("Who Is Hiring In Canada"), and got mixed responses.

I am a 31 (almost 32) years old European, EU citizen (Hungary) wanting to relocate to Canada (Toronto/Vancouver). I have checked out the options, so far I have seen two ways of managing the move:

- going there as a Skilled worker and also as a Maverick: I have to show 14k CAD on my account for the entry and try to find a job once there

- going there with a Valid Job Offer from any "Canadian" company (must be established, and registered there), no budget check, just need to cover the first few months

I am actively applying on LinkedIn/Glass-door, whatever jobsite I find. I'm a full-stack engineer with IT BSc having 8 years of commercial experience (startups, fortune 500s), so "skill-wise" I should be qualified for many jobs, even if I have to accept sacrifices like the role/tech/salary, whatever it takes to get started.

I have lived in three countries in Europe already, it is simply "boring", and the war in Ukraine puts my foreseeable career/life at risk. Don't get me wrong, I am not a refugee, but wish to live on a much greener pasture.

If you have any tip, insight, or a name of a Company worth to checkout, please don't hesitate to comment! Any help is much Appreciated!

THANKS! Arpad

Otherwise you can land directly with Express Entry based on your credentials. Much easier to find a job when you area already in the country!

heads up it isn't cheap and there isn't a lot of sunlight

If you go the maverick route, try to get some hard data on what type of budget you'll need as both Toronto and Vancouver are expensive cities, especially for rent. Just because the government will let you in with CAD$14k doesn't mean it's not risky if that's all the funds you have. Hopefully you'd be able to find employment quickly but the economy does appear headed in a bad direction and you could find yourself competing against those who have recently been laid off and have much better connections than you at the companies that are hiring.

Yes, I have seen some concerning posts on twitter about this. Since most of the established worldwide Tech started to abandon/leave the Russian market or exclude users from there they are producing worse numbers towards investors compared to the previous quarter, which results in mass-layoffs. And this tendency is already started to happen.

To avoid this, I am seeking early-stage, maybe Canada/US only startups, or region-focused enterprises, which are not impacted by this situation.

I've seen this company on linkedin Vanhack[0] they are a recruiting firm that connects devs with companies in Canada. Might be a good place to start. This is for the purpose of relocating to Canada of course

It looks similar to a company I have seen which takes advantage of "third-world" qualified workers by sponsoring ("relocating") them, employing them for a fix period of 2 years, probably for crumbs and the termination of the contracts resulting paying back the "relocation/visa costs". I can imagine, many people from developing countries would still willing to take the risk, but I am not adjusted to that.

But thanks!

I have checked, their model is different. They matching with sposoring companies, and actually they don't charge the job-seekers. Maybe relevant, however I am avoiding meat-grinder places

its worth a shot, to see what kind of companies they partner with, maybe you can find a good one.
