A 69% increase is mind blowing. Is there something this may have missed in this study, seems pretty unbelievable that people wouldn’t plant wheat earlier if they could given that wheat has been grown in the eastern gangetic basin for millennia and was one of the earliest places for the transition to agriculture.

The current cycle is established by millenia of trial and error. Changing crop cycles has long standing implications on air pollution, water table and other ecology. Yield is not the only thing that needs to be optimized.

Heard about Delhi's smogs ? They are created by unnatural season of paddy planting in West India [region where wheat was staple crop]. India cannot afford a similar change of ecological balance in East with Wheat [Naturally paddy growing area].
