Ask HN: Any outdoorsy HNers who want to do a wilderness meetup?

I love wilderness hiking and overlanding all over the west, and I've got a big list of 'secret sites' I've been to that are amazing and free to camp at. Some of them are even right on rivers and allow for hours of kayaking.

When I camp with friends it's mostly hanging out, music, drinks, amazing cooking, some mind-expansion for those who are into it, etc.

If we can get a handful of people on board, I think something in October/November of this year would be very doable.

Thoughts?

I've been full-time free camping for the last couple of years. If folks in 'straya ever wanna catch up for intersection of software dev remote work + bushdoof + camping lemme know. Pretty easy to get in contact with and my van has starlink on it -> https://ghuntley.com/

Cool lifestyle - I might have to give it a try some time.

Which continent are you on? And you might want to narrow that down a little further, too.

Oops, thanks for the heads-up. Yeah I'm in California and I like to travel all over, to Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, Oregon,Washington, etc.

Do you mind sharing some of them with us? I, for one, am very interested.

I can share a few if anyone wants to email me although it's common practice not to post them in public. These areas are sensitive and tend to get trashed/destroyed as soon as they gain enough popularity.

You can find your own secret sites with a combination of google earth and BLM maps[1] and Land Matters[2]

For example, in Death Valley National Park, there's a backcounty road called Hunter Mountain Road, and if you look in the right spot up there, there's an old abandoned boy scout camp with ample parking and fire rings. Completely unlisted.

The lower Colorado River also has a lot of areas like these.

Is this like Burning Man?

Hah. No I don't think so. You actually run into a lot of legal issues if you're trying to meet up with any significant number of people.
