I've written about this topic a fair amount; first examining some of the criticisms of SQL that have been present since the language's inception [1], then looking at a new project called Malloy that I'm quite excited about, and think has a lot of potential to address some of the problems of SQL as it relates to data analysis [2].

I think the main problem with SQL is how it tries to be too “human like” and “non-programmers friendly” with all the English words, when it’s still used by programmers in the end.

I don’t see Malloy fixing it as it’s still using many English words and trying to be too much “sentence like”, but maybe I read it wrong

I agree that a major problem with SQL is its misguided attempt to be natural language-like. However skimming malloy examples it looks like they are just trying to be strongly declarative but not making the natural language mistake.
