More Self-Checkout Is Coming, No Matter How Much You Hate It

Hate it? I love self-checkout. I love having more lanes available, and I can do it nearly as fast as the clerks do. It's not strenuous, and the time is spent occupied rather than watching a clerk do something I could do myself.

Sorry for the clerks who lose their jobs over it. I hope they find something else to do, preferably something better paid. But the only people I've met who hate self-checkout seem to begrudge the fact that previously people did work for you that you can now do yourself -- especially as the machines get more reliable and require fewer interventions.

I love self-checkout. But I wish stores at least were generous enough to give us an incentive for doing some of the work ourselves.

The normal checkout at my local store includes free fruit bags, while the self-checkout has nothing.

Maybe they think skipping the long queue should be enough reward.

Self check-out is an age test. If you have it and constantly whine about it, you're probably over at least 50. Most younger folks don't mind.
