I don’t see how this helps. If the law applies to Indian customers then the Indian government would just claim that they need to keep logs of customers connecting FROM India, rather than TO it. If the law is written the other way around then they could alternatively route all traffic to India with 2 hops via one of their servers in another country so that all traffic connecting TO India originates from themselves.
Yes, but it means companies don't have to comply with the laws (since they're outside their jurisdiction), and the burden falls on the government to find a way to block their citizens from connecting to the VPN servers. Which might end up either with China like censorship, and possibly local opposition against it.
Feels like the right move. The whole point of VPN is to maintain some level of privacy. If all that data is logged and is to be produced on demand, Proton can’t really claim to be a VPN company.
It's still a VPN, just not an anonymous one.
Many websites, and CloudFlare especially, treat VPN IPs as second class citizens
Proton markets itself as an anonymous VPN though [0], so my point still stands.
Many forums prevent you from posting via VPN, and many websites will CAPTCHA or straight-up block you. At least it's becoming obvious at this point: give us your personal data, let us know as much as we can about you, or you are not welcome.
