The author is meaning to be belittling and critical, but he’s actually just showing how starstruck he is by these people. What did he expect random text messages from acquaintances to include? Brilliant, well researched strategic analysis? They’re spitballing. This reads like a man discovering his heroes are just mere mortals.

And the contradiction he mentions is no contradiction at all. You can both allow all legal tweets and ban bots. Bots do not have legal right. We deserve better journalists and better journalism.

I am truly wondering how much of this is writing with agenda in mind and how much of it is truly ignorance of technology. It is always possible it is a little bit of both, but it is fascinating how much of a polarizing human Musk has become.

I dislike the article's title too. I am not sure which friends exactly are embarrassing here. But here at least I can explain it with attempting at clickbait.

What’s up with OP’s editorialised title? The Atlantic uses “Elon Musk’s Texts Shatter the Myth of the Tech Genius”.

My guess was that The Atlantic changed the title, as media outlets do these days. Since the alternate title on the HN post sounds like something a professional headline writer would write.
