It's sick and extremely maladaptive to say outright that everyone should be traumatized for their own good.

I think OP meant life will lead to adversities that destroy some people, others overcome it which builds a robust character.

Or it's simply survivorship bias. Airplanes with red dots didnt grow up to be strong.

Did he say that? I didn't get that. And, reflecting back on my 59 years...it was the tough times that caused me to grow. YMMV.

Trauma is the result of tough times that actively stunted or even undid your growth.
