If you're interested in this sort of stuff, I would also highly recommend checking out the Experimental Farm Network.[0] They do cool crowd-sourced projects like breeding a cold hardy avocado or domesticating new plants

The cold-hardy avocado sounds amazing. I am growing a couple pits from avocados I got at the store as a curiosity project. They really look ragged by the end of even a mid-Atlantic winter.

Then maybe you should try getting in touch! You could get ahold of some varieties and try to do some selective breeding in your own area and contribute pits if it works out

I've been hoping something like this would come along.

I'd like to see how they address safety and GMO.

One of the strengths of Monsanto/Dow/etc is that they have significant resources in labs and tracking of safety.

The cost of modifying seeds is coming down, but I believe safety measures and tracking do need to be in place for this to be a success.
