California, Midwest at ‘high risk’ for electricity shortages in next five years

California needs efficient grid storage to solve the problem, e.g. good old fashioned pumped water batteries. There is an excess of power from solar during the day, and my guess is that the power companies don’t want it because it just lowers energy prices and the energy can’t be stored for off hours. Those with home storage, such as EV’s or power walls, should be just fine. I’m sure that big agricultural concerns have contingencies ready to go if the state doesn’t kick in.

Interestingly, the Chicago metro area is excluded from the large swath of midwestern states at high-risk. I wonder if this is partially because Chicago gets much of its power from six nuclear reactors in the area:
