Do formal mentorship inside organisations work?

do you know of places that have formal mentorship programs for engineers (where engineers from different parts of the orgs are matched in some way)… are these programs effective in your opinion ?

context: I am an engineering manager in a tech company- and I'm trying to design a program for mentoring engineers.
