Ask HN: Is there market need for custom renderers? Or it's oversaturated already

When I think about custom renderers and custom rendering solutions I mostly associate that with late '90s Hollywood where they been writing custom software for rendering graphic for example for The Matrix movies or the Lord of The Rings. But since then most of 3D rendering software grew significantly gaining new functions and rendering methods, otpimizations etc. But I have no idea if that made market for custom solutions shrunk or there is still space to fill or maybe that space is even increasing? I lack any sense of metric to measure or estimate the situation around this topic. Anyone mind to share their insights or opinions?
