Australians can opt out of targeted ads, erase their data under proposed reforms

No matter if there’s a catch somewhere or not, laws like this one are a good thing but I’m sure someone will argue that Australia has no say in what a company from another country can and cannot do with data collected from Australian citizens.

If more and more countries start to enforce this kind of regulations we might reach a point where companies have to start treating user data with more care and respect.

I know, ain’t gonna happen because money but still, one can dream.

I fear it will be the same shit like in EU. They collect your data and to opt out to have send normal mail with a request to delete it. This does not mean that they not already sold your data.

A good law will be a law with default to opt out but the possibility to opt in.

Some parts of this sound like they'd be useful, but I have to wonder what the catch is.
