First of all: This seems solely political and thus misplaced.

Secondly: Not arguing this isn't used for political gain by other authoritarians, but looking at the USSR, China, Cambodia... this feels like a healthy response to any notion of leftist ideology getting traction.

In a vacuum, yes. But this can be used to paint Red practically any attempt at improving society.
