Live on a cruise ship for $30k per year

Sounds epic for retired people who want to see the world! But is it profitable for the cruise company… what happens if they realise this half way through the journey and are forced to cancel the rest of the trip?
After the 30th "tropical island" port, will you even bother to get off the boat?
To wander around souvenir shops or try the local cuisine, again.
Though even with that in mind I guess different people could be looking for different things when they visit a place.
This would be about $47.815 per year. Not that far off.

Is this a joke? This thinly-veiled promotional advertising masquerading as an article also admits that the destinations listed on the official website is false?

> 13[0] square feet “Virtual Inside” staterooms – which start at $30K per person per year,
So that's $60K/yr for 2 people to share a room.
Plus taxes and fees, no doubt. I don't pay tax on my apartment rent.
13 sq ft a little bigger than midway between that and a standard crib mattress (28"×52", 10.1+ sq ft)
This...must be a typo.
But if the room is on a big noisy, vibrating vehicle consuming lot of fuel and I’m not allowed to go walking/cycling outside in the forest, the dream become a nightmare.
Reviews I've read sound like living in a floating overcrowded mall meets water park meets casino.
I don't know how one could possibly tolerate that for more than a few days at a time without either going nuts or alcoholic.
You have to compare like-to-like. You can go camping to minimize housing costs. Unfortunately the buffet service is sub par and the drink service is non-existent. There's not even a service class of people that will clean your tent for you and fold cute towel animals while you enjoy am afternoon of bocce ball.
If it's the sort of extended trip someone is into, it might well be a decent deal. But it's not an absolute bargain relative to other alternatives one could put together.
But it's hard for me to imagine being in this regimented existence for 3 months let alone 3 years. And while people can presumably take a break and meet the ship at another port, the practical issues for, again, the sort of people this might appeal to seem considerable.
I imagine you can get off with it if you're some sort of independent freelancer/consultant who doesn't need to coordinate much. But I doubt any HR department would touch you. I sure wouldn't. Sounds like way more potential for problems than I would want to deal with. Hard pass.

I can't wrap my mind with how this works, is it like a capsule? For 3 years?!

Regardless, it sounds like 130 square feet is the actual measurement.

That's not even considering the effects on marine life. We have a bunch of useless noise-makers just patrolling water endlessly for no good reason. After 9/11 when all the traffic near New York was forced to stop, whales were shown to be more relaxed than ever before because they didn't have to listen to our constant racket for a few days.
Oh come on. Either your evil meter is out of whack or your bar for "pure evil" is hysterically low.
I'm sure you do, but I don't mind. A bar for "evil" that counts cruise ships as "pure evil," is a step or two away from being like someone raving on a street-corner with a sandwich board, telling everyone they're evil and going to hell.
To that it appears you may have fallen for, and are attempting to spread some discredited outrage porn/flamebait[0][1], possibly due to confirmation bias and the strength of your beliefs. Obviously since video was a fairly new media at this time, I'll agree that this attempt at depicting charity is a little more than off-color now, regardless of the precise contents.
I would check the HN Guidelines[2] since this whole comment kind of qualifies as fulminating and is kind of extremely political and ideological.

I fail to see how these types of discussion "trample curiosity" as the guidelines put it. I think it's rather obvious that restricting the conversation is what tramples curiosity.
Imagine trying to predict the next two years of legislation that applies to you at the local, county, state, federal, and multilateral levels. It's hopeless because it's a system composed of the most complicated systems we know of -- people.
If you can't predict it, then controlling it is also hopeless. Control being one of the basic things a hacker seeks out.
Now if you convince a county of people to unanimously trust consumer electronics to process their vote fairly in a ballot measure, that and every facet about how you did that is obviously interesting.
Textual chads about what expressions of wealth inequality are egregious or harmful aren't terribly interesting or easy to read about.
Whatever floats your boat, so to speak.
But seriously, where are we going if old people are gonna have to confine themselves into cruises? I get the cost opportunity, but...

But I would still file reliable, performant, unmetered Internet in the aspirational category.
E.g. in 2008 where many went for a 100k mile bonus credit card offer for British Airways miles.
Can’t imagine disconnecting from everyone for 3 years though.
> Always stay connected to the real world with the fastest internet available at sea
Now there's a high bar!
The price is per person as well and you’ll be sharing as a couple. If you go as a single you will pay 1.7x the per person rate.
