DietPi is a lightweight Debian based Linux distribution for SBCs and server systems, with the option to install desktop environments, too. It ships as minimal image but allows to install complete and ready-to-use software stacks with a set of console based shell dialogs and scripts.

The source code is hosted on GitHub: https://github.com/MichaIng/DietPi The main website can be found at: https://dietpi.com/

I've been using it for a while, and the developers are super friendly.

The installation/deinstallation of a single piece of software is just an entry in a super long file (dietpi-software), that caters for virtual environments, and installs all new software as a their own dedicated user.

Very easy, very stable. I've been running nextcloud, transmission, and homeassistant on it flawlessly for a while now. I sometimes run Kodi and moonlight on it too. Again, insanely easy to setup, and no ansible or docker in sight.

I've used this for both a print server and for pi-hole. It's lightweight and I love the ease of setup/configuration/updating. Really enjoy the TUI interface

What's the dietpi flavor for Bannana Pi ??

what would be the advantages of using dietpi on a raspberry pi over e.g. ubuntu?

Debian is very stable. None of the Ubuntu drama with random changed to stuff like DNS resolvers each release.

I've used DietPi on several SBCs including the Raspberry Pi 2. Anecdotally, I've found the main advantage is a lot of the quality of life features that the distro offers. A file called dietpi.txt can be used to easily provision new SBCs on the first boot. The distro also has a lot of TUI utilities that can be used to connect the device to WiFi, configure settings, and install common software packages for SBCs (Nextcloud, FTP server, etc...). The creators have also adjusted a lot of the defaults such as the default SSH server (Dropbear instead of OpenSSH) and logging policy (RAM-only by default) to better match how the average hobbyist probably uses their SBC.

Much faster response time due to optimized use of I/O operations.
